Know the Issue of Corrosion

Corrosion is a problem for any trailer, especially for boat trailers and even more especially for boat trailers that make contact with salt water. Keeping your boat clean and dry is the best way to avoid corrosion, which has its inherent challenges when it comes to boat trailers.

Regularly Clean the Boat Trailer

For boat trailers, try to wash them at the ramp. If that’s not possible, haul it to the nearest car wash. Ideally, you will also wash your trailer upon returning home from time out on the water, depending on how much water and dirt it collected while driving.

Check the Brakes

These need roughly the same attention as car brakes, with the caveat that boat trailer brakes may be submerged during loading and unloading, so they will be prone to corrosion and need maintenance more frequently. Keep them clean and have the brake pads or shoes inspected regularly. Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder.

Be Mindful of the Lights

Try to mount lights so you can remove them before launching. If not, always unplug them from your vehicle and let them cool down before getting them wet or submerged.
